Alyssa's Dive

   with Alyssa Bourque

I first snorkeled over it just to verify that I really wanted to do this! I saw  nothing but colors of the rainbow painted on the walls. I was sure this was going to be a great dive! I listened to the briefing, hooked up my gear and jumped in. The sudden rush of water gushing through my wet suit got my adrenaline pumping! I was psyched. Mom and I were buddies and we ventured down the wall of brilliant coral colors, majestic caves with branches of black coral reaching out to grab you. The light rays pierced the water lighting up all it. It was more than a dream come true.

Captivated by all this, I felt my Mom*s fin push water my way. I looked up to see her go into a tunnel. I followed; but as we were going through, I got a little paranoid and backed out. I watched her come out the other side and she looked mesmerized. We continued down the reef and I got up the nerve to really LOOK out into the clear blue yonder; it wasn't scary. Actually, I saw two or three Black-tip reef sharks and nothing else.

I was just swimming along and I felt a tug. It was Dad signaling to look at my depth gauge! Oh my, 120 feet! I had to come up to 105 feet. It finally came time for us to turn around and start heading back to the boat. I thought it would be all around the same but it looked very different on the way back. We were coming up to a shallow area and I surfaced. The first breath of fresh air after a dive is always the best, refreshing your lungs with air and knowing you have another dive to look forward to. I handed up my gear to the captain and got on the boat. As I was taking apart my gear a diver who had stayed aboard asked me what the dive was like, I took a long, deep breath ... *Extraordinary*
